TRADITION BUILDS
Building the future means understanding our past.
Do You Have A Project We Can Help With?
We began in 1994 with multi-generational carpenters – a fitting start for crafting and creating the framework for everything that is built to last. We are driven by the values of safety, integrity, trust, and excellence to help build communities.
It all started with N.L. “Red” Metcalf, a third-generation carpenter. Red attended Oceanside Junior College and spent two years in the Navy with flight training experience before moving into full-time construction at Peter Kiewit and Sons in southern California. For the next ten years, Red acted as project superintendent to help build concrete high-rises and heavy civil projects such as siphon barrels, pumping plants, and highway bridges. With some experience under his belt, he made the leap to Hawaii, where he spent the next 24 years as a project superintendent with Charles Pankow, Inc., building resorts, high-rise offices, and condominiums. After that, Red co-founded Metcalf Builders Inc. (MBI) in northern Nevada and spent his time as project superintendent before retiring in 2004, then again in 2010.

Thomas “Tom” R. Metcalf, fourth-generation carpenter.
Entering the business as a fourth-generation carpenter, Thomas “Tom” R. Metcalf was the first in the family to attain a college degree. Tom spent six years as a form carpenter building high-rise condominiums in Hawaii while attending high school and college. He earned a BS in engineering and construction management at Arizona State University, then spent another 11 years split between Charles Pankow, Inc. and The Center Companies constructing high-rise condos, hotel resorts, and shopping centers, including the largest open-air shopping center in the world, Ala Moana, in Honolulu. Tom then moved to Carson City, Nevada, to co-found MBI with his father, Red.
Starting in 1994, Metcalf Builders Inc. was built from the ground up, serving private and public sector projects throughout Nevada before expanding to Texas. Tom ran the office, including sales, pre-con, estimating, and project management, while Red spent his time in the field as project superintendent. Over the years, word of MBI’s work spread and allowed them to grow, expanding to California, Idaho, Colorado, Louisiana, Mississippi, Pennsylvania, and Florida, while keeping its roots in Nevada. By 2009, the company had over 40 employees and celebrated its biggest volume year at around $50M. Over the next decade, MBI focused on the hospitality sector, building multiple hotels and resorts throughout northern Nevada and northern California in what was deemed the rebuilding years after the “great recession.”

Metcalf — Together we are building the future.™
In 2018, Tom ushered in Bryce Clutts as the new president of MBI, where he became a full partner in 2020. A native Nevadan and longtime construction executive and owner, Bryce was eager for his next challenge. Today Bryce serves as the company’s President and CEO leading the company’s strategic initiatives. Their partnership is driven by a dual purpose, to innovate and build community.
In 2022, MBI was ready to bring on the next generation of building and builders. Always focused on family and partnership, MBI re-branded itself as Metcalf, to better meet the needs of our customers’ expectations and to function in a modern, digital landscape. While also recognizing the two founders of our company, Red Metcalf and Tom Metcalf, the new identity forever solidifies their name in the boldness of the new brand. It also reflects how we shape and develop communities while continuing to build upon the company’s legacy.
Today we are focused on the future to design and build complex structures that transform landscapes, yet we continue to hold our founding values in everything we do. At Metcalf, we believe that every partnership is built on trust and integrity, and that together we are building the future.
