Metcalf Builders has partnered with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada to launch construction of the new child care center, Smart Start in Carson City.

Located at 2805 Mountain St., the $2 million project will transform a former office building into the largest Smart Start center in western Nevada, with capacity for up to 80 children from newborn to age 5, according to a news release. The center is expected to open in early 2026.

The 7,500-square-foot center will be named the William N. Pennington Center Smart Start, recognizing a $1.639 million grant from the William N. Pennington Foundation. The project supports the Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada’s broader initiative to expand early childhood education in the region, which has added more than 220 childcare spots since early 2024 across Carson City and Minden.

“Creating spaces where children can learn, grow, and thrive is one of the most meaningful ways we can invest in the future of our community,” Bryce Clutts, President and CEO of Metcalf Builders, said in the release.

Set within a residential neighborhood, the new center is designed to blend into the surrounding community while providing a safe environment for early learners. The center will include five developmentally appropriate classrooms, a private nursing area, and two interactive playgrounds, along with safety and accessibility upgrades throughout to support children, families and staff.
