Over the years, Tom Metcalf has always found a way to give back, by serving several local chapters to help develop the community and fellow masons. He joined the Carson Tahoe Hospital Trustee board in 1996, elected as Board Chairman from 2000-2001, where he led the transition from a county hospital to a 501c3 non-profit. In addition, in 1996, Tom joined the Builders Association of Western Nevada (BAWN), now called Nevada Builders Association (NBA), and served as president in 2000. Tom also co-founded the Builders Association of Western Nevada Self Insured Group (BAWNSIG) in 1999, the largest workers comp self-insured group in the state of Nevada, where he continues as Vice Chairman of the board of directors. Later, Tom served as president of the Foundation Board of Western Nevada Community College (WNCC). After his tenure as president at WNCC ended, he continued to help fund and build the WNCC Observatory and classroom building. He played an instrumental role in assisting the current president, Dr. Carol Lucy, in successfully transitioning the school of Construction Management from the University of Northern Nevada (UNR) to WNCC. This shift allowed the WNCC to become a four-year college as part of Western Nevada College (WNC). In 2006, then-Governor, Jim Gibbons, appointed Tom to the Nevada State Board of Public Works, where he served until 2016 when he finished as Chairman of the Board.
